Synopsis
Scheduled for release in 2024, “Bhakshak” is a Hindi crime drama that will serve as an adaptation of one of the most shocking accounts of systemic apathy in modern India. The film is Pulkit’s directorial venture and will be produced by Gauri Khan and Gaurav Verma under the Red Chillies Ent. banner. The film draws inspiration from the nation’s outrage regarding the Muzaffarpur shelter home scandal in 2018. It chronicles the abuse of young girls in a fictional government-sponsored institution set in the sham town of Munawwarpur, Bihar, alongside a journalist portrayal who attempts to expose this vile secret.
The lead character in the film is an investigative journalist named Vaishali Singh, portrayed by seasoned actress Bhumi Pednekar. Singh is employed at a small media company, and as for her values, she epitomizes a person who believes in the pursuit of truth and justice. She works hard to uncover the authentic stories that lie behind society’s facade instead of seeking fame or wealth. While pursuing what appears to be a routine story, she uncovers some very unsettling details regarding power use and misuse within a girls’ shelter home. Her thorough investigation reveals shocking evidence of systematic sexual exploitation alongside bureaucratic cover-up.
With every subsequent lead she explores around the shelter home, additional horrors come to light. Their abuse extends beyond physical confinement; they form part of a larger syndicate involving corrupt politicians, business people, local government officials, and policemen. This chilling web of corruption is led by a politician named Banzi Sahu who deeply influences the town’s governance and is aggressively portrayed by Aditya Srivastava.
Rather than international threats, it is the local bureaucratic processes and ‘hands-off’ approaches from superiors that pose to be an obstacle in her path; time-stopping oversight regulations. Bhaskar Sinha (Sanjay Mishra), a senior journalist who mentors Vaishali, further enables the obliteration of her obstacles through unwavering support. Accompanying Vaishali is SSP Jasmeet Kaur (Sai Tamhankar); although originally on the opposing side, she transforms into an unexpected yet crucial ally.
The system which is operationally designed to enable violence sustains near-silently. Without a formal declaration by law, public outrage acts as a pillar of justice for women – one that it seldom receives. The lack of response fuels resiliency towards consequence-free action, fostering strength in angered numbers rallying behind vocal discontent.

Critical Reception
Bhakshak has sparked intense controversy, but its merits are undisputed – though Pednekar’s critics have attempted to debunk her performance as Vaishali Singh by calling it emotionally one-note. Many others have noted her portrayal of an intensely psychologically pressured journalist as mesmerizing – demanding a complex blend of fear, rage, exhaustion, and unyielding resolve to fight.
Alongside these remarkable performances comes powerful emotion from Sanjay Mishra and Aditya Srivastava in his villainous turn branded as bombastic yet chilling in his frosty unpredictability.. Adding to this stellar line-up is Sai Tamhankar as a female officer torn between duty and political games who commands attention every moment she appears on screen.
While some laud the movie for addressing a critical theme, others take issue with the screenplay. Their concerns focus on the second act, which, in their opinion, crosses the line into excessive melodrama. These reviewers believed that certain scenes detracted from the film’s powerful message. The film has also faced criticism for lack of subtlety in exposition, as characters deliver lines that oversimplify complex ideas instead of allowing the audience to draw insights from the narrative’s depth.
Despite its shortcomings, Bhakshak maintains deep—and deeply critical—conversations about journalism, justice, and accountability alongside unrestrained anger.
Conclusion
It is undeniably painful to watch bhakshak narratives like these are universal . It cuts open the horrifying tapestry of gendered violence married to institutional betrayal—abuse and victim silencing along with systemic structures designed to bury truth through the lens of a woman named Vaishali Singh who dares so expose reality.
In contrast, bhakshak refuses genre bounds beyond a typical crime drama: Instead it turns into an ode to men and women , conflict survivors brutally oppressed in brutal regimes at tremendous personal sacrifice utterly drenched by tides of cruelty whatever remains have been crushed by society shed light upon decay instead focuses on why society allows themself become decayed structured supported enable this rot occurring enable this rot occurring their own will.
Bhakshak stands out from other Indian films released in 2024 due to its relentless direction and striking performances which echo deeply resonant messages. While this movie may go unrecognized within the backdrop of the busy film industry, it will certainly draw attention to the noise that surrounds each news headline. Each headline conceals stories that are profoundly significant and elicit compelling emotions.
