Rendel

HOLLYWOOD FILM SYNOPSIS

Rendel: Dark Vengeance (2017) is an action film from Finland that is centered on superheroes, being the first to try out a comic book superhero action flick. Rendel, directed by Jesse Haaja, is a Finnish superhero film that takes bold strides in areas of filmmaking still largely unexplored in Finland. These attempts portray Rendel’s character who, for reasons unknown, and rather darkly seems intent to punish corporate wrongdoing. The film showcases a different view outside Hollywood as it blends violent depiction of vengeance with a comic book styled anger to provide the non-hollywood perspective of superheroes.

PLOT SYNOPSIS

The narrative follows an ex-employee of a corporation who becomes a vigilante named Rämö and whose existence collapses when he loses his wife and child to murder. Rämö used to be employed by VALA, an evil pharmaceutical company and one of the largest marketers of the NH25 vaccine. NH25 has been marketed without proper trials inflicting pain or even death to countless unwitting users. And while trying to fight for opposition against the release, he faces retaliations from the company. Following his family’s demise, Rämö endures severe emotional trauma as he feels utterly alone in the world.

Stricken with grief and rage, Rämö’s psychology undergoes a metamorphosis. It is then that he understands one of VALA’s vaccine’s ingredients has peculiar physiological effects on him; pouring it onto his skin results in a black tar-like substance which crystallizes into an almost indestructible exoskeleton. Driven by an insatiable thirst for vengeance and donning a skin-tight suit of armor along with bespoke masks, he adopts the moniker Rendel, inspired by the Hungarian word for “order.”

Rendel embarks on a campaign against VALA’s operations in Finland, commencing with targeted strikes on warehouses and distribution centers. Leads later evolve into the methodical extermination of upper-echelon tier mercenary commanders. Meanwhile, VALA targets him internationally employing renowned mercenaries and assassin squads. However, Rendel’s stealth and mastery over unarmed combat ensures flawless execution during every ambush he orchestrates.

Through a brutal meeting with VALA’s executive elites, he confronts them mercilessly and somehow manages to achieve a sense of redemption afterwards. The intricacies of the plot are unresolved as it seems this was left for development in the sequels. Kris Gummerus fulfills the role of Rendel, while Gummerus portrays Rendel alias Rämö who claims the titular position of the film. Rendel stands as the lone martyr suffering through endless agony born from destruction; a rebirth of reckoning ignited.

Rami Rusinen as Rotikka: One of VALA’s henchmen. Suffers from unbridled greed and temperamental violence typical of elite members of the company.

Matti Onnismaa as Mr. Erola: The malevolent head of VALA’s operations in Finland.

Bianca Bradey as Stacy: Hired internationally as an assassination contractor to terminate Rendel’s life.

Johnny Vivash as Radek: Another aligned mercenary serving under VALA with a contract on his head from a multinational squad for mercenaries’ prerequisites.

Alina Tomnikov as Marla: A journalist slowly uncovering the truth about the war between VALA and Rendel, piece by piece, revealing more layers to this complex narrative.

Completing the supporting roles alongside Tero Salenius and Aake Kalliala is Sheila Shah, playing various operatives and officials caught up in a pharmaceutical conspiracy.

Direction and Production

Plans for Rendel have been in mind for Jesse Haaja, the film’s director, since well before its release. A concept began as a comic book and later transformed into a feature length film through crowdfunding that garnered support from nearly 500 backers. His direction is notable for the dark, gritty aesthetics he emphasizes. The lighting remains brooding while the action maintains a visceral quality alongside unyielding pacing. The Finnish landmarks Mikkeli and others portray the frigid, industrial cityscape that perfectly encapsulates Rendel’s story.

The film’s production marked an important milestone in Finnish genre cinema. It was shot in several cities including Kajaani, Varkaus, Sotkamo, Kuopio, and Helsinki all within an economical budget of €1.45 million.

Music and Visuals

With equally impressive components complementing one another visually and audibly throughout the film, Rendel presents a cohesive piece by executing its narrative proficiently with stunning visuals to aid it. Perhaps one of the most distinguishing features of the movie is its costume design particularly Rendel’s armory which sets him apart from other characters. Tero Saikkonen was responsible for cinematography and captured Rendel’s suit’s black tar-like texture signaling utilitarian yet emblematic design blended boundlessly into urban scenery with stylized lighting closeups portraying harnessed grimness. hand-to-hand combat has been hyper-accelerated during the edit to enhance explosive sequences featuring intense clashes between combatants.

For the film’s promotion, Tuomas Kantelinen along with Tiko Lasola and Jussi Huhtala collaborated to create powerful and emotionally striking pieces of music. In addition, “Wonderman,” an original work by The Rasmus also contributed to the films promotional features as well.

Rendel main theme revolves around the catastrophic impacts of unregulated power, including deep emotional scars caused in life by horrendous personal loss. Rämö seeks vengeance after losing someone close to him, but counter intuitively seems to want to restore balance instead to a world immersed in greed and carelessness. For this reason it makes Rendel closer to antiheroes like The Punisher or Batman instead of idealistic super heroes.

Another revolving aspect of plot are evil corporations having faceless nature. VALA corporate executive officers along with 征服者 foreign mercenaries represent outsourced rot that hunger profits. Eponymous character is illustrated as silent and terse but equally brutal; he embodies fierce retribution that justice system cannot provide alongside broken legal system.Diluted vengeance without sense.

The film explores extremes of solitude. Following metamorphosis, Rendel becomes mute or barely speaks at all; He does not fill silence with action which is actually quite the opposite: Silence has its meaning, far deeper than any words uttered devoid meticulous thought devoid sense think devoid sentences strung together.

Reception

Critics assigned a range of mixed to average ratings for Rendel’s film, but aligned closely in their reasoning. Most praised the ambition and concept of the film, particularly coming from a non-conventional filmmaking country in regard to superhero cinema. However, many critiqued the plot structure and lackluster supporting characters. Other notable issues included uneven pacing as well as poor dialogue due to translation and dubbing for international audiences, which overshadowed segments of the movie.

In spite of criticisms, the movie gained a cult following among fans of dark superhero fiction vigilante stories. While American films are predominantly known for these genres, this film was unique with regard to setting and tone.

“He intended to speak toward its genre appeal, which is underscored by the ‘Best Action Movie’ award at the Mexico breakout Feratam Film Festival.”

Franchise Possibilities

A sequel titled Rendel 2: Cycle of Revenge was planned. Production had begun in 2019 but faced creative and logistical difficulties, including the removal of Jesse Haaja as director. Although touted as finished, there is no set date for release. Thus far description indicates goals such as deepening mythology involving Rendel’s psyche along with his adversaries.

Conclusions

Rendel: Dark Vengeance stands out as one of the rare contemporary superhero films not dependent on special effects or a lavish budget. The film’s straightforward roots are what make it unique.
